Contemporary espionage television series based on the Republican era, especially the Sino-Japanese War often present a serious ideological break between the Maoist imagination of a communist modernizationand a post-socialist neoliberal imagination. The identity of a Communist Party member is only sustained by the nationalist sentiments often associated with CCP. The two themes of Chinese modernization, enlightenmentand national salvation are usually reduced to the conflict between an espionageand his/her environment, and the symbolic actions of sending information devoid of any signification.
Such ideological break would naturally cause serious problem for fan fiction writers who attempt to achieve a completeness between thecurrent social thoughts and those communists more than 70 years ago. During the process, the post-socialist imagination of the first 27 years of the People's Republic has been largely reduced into another symbolic representation of evil without concrete historical details. The neoliberal rejection of the former communist mode of modernization has led to a black and white binarism between the abnormal Maoist past and the normal post-socialist present, with the characters themselves fitting uncomfortably through the traumatic transition.
